Default collapsed pressure plates?

was speaking to an aprilia mechanic earlier and i spoke to him about my clutch problems im having:

clutch problem being that if i pull the clutch lever in, knock it into gear it will bite, also the lever will go completely slack and wont spring back as it should - the more i tighten it up from the clutch lever and down by the engine, it gets gradually worse and worse.

anyway, so he said that it could be and sounds like my pressure plates have collapsed and by the time it gets right to the end of the adjustment down by the engine, actuating arm? it could fall through into the gear box... when he says pressure plates does he mean these steel plates in the clutch basket?

if its just the steel plates then its an easy job.

i dont particularly want to take it to them because they will cost me a fortune and will take they're time to do it, not just that, they are the only aprilia dealers near me for miles and are the only local place to me that will touch my bike (for obvious reasons that its an aprilia) so i want to see if i can do it myself if its possibly, if not i will take it to them.

Nah, pressure plate is something different, its a small plate that sits over the friction and steel plates, it wears down, along with the grub screw that acts on it. i replied to a similar post recently with more info n pic, try searching my posts n you should find it

Its an easy enough job to replace yourself

he means this part

number 8

http://www.apriliagenuineparts.co.uk...clutch-765.php

its common for the ball bearing in the middle to wear down, and like random says this part as well

http://www.apriliagenuineparts.co.uk...-cover-766.php

number 4

can wear down as well.often you'll get an indentation mark on the flat end of the screw where its just being constantly pushed against the ball bearing in the pressure plate.so either or both will wear.

and if it were me i'd also check the friction plates had some meat on em and check the steel plates were ok i.e. no heat marks and warpage.

definately. check it all while its out and drained. the clutch sounds daunting, but imo its not hard to get to and pretty easy to check / replace, have a go
